Answer:
Hi Jordan T.

The answer to your question is yes, laser surgery can prevent blindness.

Laser surgery is excellent for people who are, for instance, nearsighted. I am severely nearsighted, and even I can't be helped with laser surgery. However, my brother, who is not as nearsighted as I am, can have his vision corrected. The primary purpose of laser surgery is to correct faulty vision from minor problems such as nearsightedness (myopia).

It has not been used to prevent blindness before recent times. Since you are asking this under the category of Diabetes, I will assume that you or someone you know has Diabetes. I also have Diabetes, Type 1. Some people with uncontrolled Diabetes become blind. That is because there is a build-up of proteins in the back of the eye. I just had my eyes checked last week, and my eyes are free of any sign of the Diabetes.

If you are starting to show signs of Diabetes in your eyes, laser surgery can be able to help that.

Fortunately, the good news is that almost everyone's vision can be saved, if the problems are found and treated soon enough. The treatment consists of laser light applications to the eye by an ophthalmologist. The laser seals the abnormal vessels, spot welds the damage and shrinks scar tissue.

Because of this new technology, many people no longer will have to go blind.

Because treatment for diabetic retinopathy works only to maintain vision at its current level, it is absolutely essential to have regular check-ups, and then to have treatment as early as possible by a laser specialist if problems are found.

Please do not wait until it is too late.
